We are very excited to offer this series of weekend morning workshops with Liz Zass, artist and weaver, to learn random weave basketry and create a unique sculptural, contemporary piece.
All welcome, no previous basketry experience needed.
About this course:
Random weave is an easily learned technique which can result in elegant, airy shapes or mysterious, densely woven, abstract pieces. It is rooted in the Japanese Ikebana basket tradition , and all about all about tension, movement and instinct. .Liz will guide you step by step through creating a simple former or mould for your work, starting the weave, building up structure, and removing the former when your piece is complete.
Unlike traditional basketry, random weave has no rigid pattern or framework. Instead, flexible materials are looped, layered and tucked intuitively, allowing the form to grow and evolve as you work. The result can be anything from a delicate, nest-like vessel to a more sculptural, expressive form.
Come and experiment, explore and see where the materials take you in this relaxed and creative workshop at Colne Road Studios this October.
You’ll make your piece in white paper yarn – clean and easy to use. We’ll discuss options for adding surface embellishment, making larger or more miniature pieces, discussing the process of experimenting with other weaving materials and ways to think about design for further projects.
About the tutor:
Beginning in 2017, Liz studied basketry at City Lit college in Central London. She completed a range of short courses and workshops, followed by their unique 2 year in-depth basketry course, and a further year of advanced study.
She likes to work with recycled and recyclable materials wherever possible.
Materials: please bring a notebook or small sketchbook, something to write or draw with and ….. 500g of rice!
Rice is used as the basis for your form/mould. Any kind of rice is fine, cheapest is best as you will be poking tools into it and wont then want to eat it. Hopefully you will want to take it home (bring a big jar) to make more pieces.
All other materials are provided.

At the moment the courses at Colne Road Studios are designed for adults over the age of 18 . The aim is to create a relaxed environment, provide a bit of an escape and switch off from every day responsibilites. We are not able to accommodate children in our classes, nor do we provide children’s classes at this time.
To secure a course, please book at least 8 days before the listed course start date.
Any course with no bookings 8 days prior to it’s start date will then be removed from the website .
Courses with fewer than 3 participants may be cancelled, with 5 days’ notice given to those who had enrolled.
You will be notified by email if this happens, unless you would like us to text you instead, but please let us know.
A refund for the full course value will then be made.

All of our longer courses are exchangeable up until 28 days prior to the start of the course. After this, you are able to change your booking to a different course for a £20 admin fee. Please note that from 14 days prior to the start of the course, your booking is non-refundable and non-exchangeable.
Our refund policy is strict because it enables us to pay ourselves and our tutors a fair wage, and remain accessible as a studio.
Every time we are asked to to accommodate a refund request, we would be forced to lower our staff wages or increase our prices – both of which we really want to avoid. We hope you understand that this is why there are no exemptions to our refund policies.
