An introduction to Book Arts -
Decorative Paper Making & Folded Books & Paper Structures
As a result of our hugely successful taster sessions over the summer we are delighted to offer a 2 part introductory book arts course running over 2 weekends.
Sat 7th and Sat 14th November 10.00am - 1.00pm
This workshop is an ideal introduction to artist bookmaking, whether you're looking for new ways to present or use your own prints, sketches and mixed media work, or simply want to explore creative paper techniques, structures and handmade books.
All materials are provided, but you're welcome to bring along any artwork, prints or special papers you'd like to incorporate, making your finished piece uniquely personal.
Decorative papers 1 - Paste papers.
Explore one of the oldest and simplest forms of paper decoration, using simple kitchen and craft cupboard essentials to create a collection of unique, richly patterned papers. You’ll have a go at a number of pattern making techniques, and experiment with a variety of improvised and ‘found’ tools to create a set of one-of-a-kind sheets for you to use in your ongoing book arts or craft journey.
Structures 1 - Simple books
What is a book? When you start to look at this question more closely, you end up in interesting places.
This is the foundation of book arts. In this session we explore different ways to make, present, and structure the simplest types of ‘books’ - a pamphlet (the codex, which we are accustomed to thinking of as a ‘book’); and a method of binding single sheets in this case a crown binding. You’ll also explore simple ways to protect the pages using covers and wrappers.
Participants are encouraged to bring decorative papers at least A4 in size, or use papers they’ve made in one of the decorative sessions.
Take home material packs will be available to purchase to make additional pamphlets

“Taking the time to learn in the inspiring environment of Colne Road Studios was such a treat! The group was welcoming and supportive and Rachel is an extremely talented and generous teacher, sharing her skills and knowledge to give us fresh perspectives and a wealth of useful advice and feedback. I felt my ability and interest in drawing had been revived after many years dormant, learning how to observe as well as how to draw. I would encourage anyone willing to pick up a pencil to have a go, and have already signed up to Rachel’s next course! “CB March 2025

All of our longer courses are exchangeable up until 28 days prior to the start of the course. After this, you are able to change your booking to a different course for a £20 admin fee. Please note that from 14 days prior to the start of the course, your booking is non-refundable and non-exchangeable.
Our refund policy is strict because it enables us to pay ourselves and our tutors a fair wage, and remain accessible as a studio.
Every time we are asked to to accommodate a refund request, we would be forced to lower our staff wages or increase our prices – both of which we really want to avoid. We hope you understand that this is why there are no exemptions to our refund policies.
