Over two, three-hour taster sessions led by Isobel Harrison, you will be introduced to the craft of crochet, from the very first loop to a finished pair of fingerless gloves. You will learn the basics; how to hold your tension, cast on, work a chain stitch and double crochet, and finish off by weaving in the ends. The workshop is beginner friendly and we will provide all the necessary tools and materials.
Crochet takes its name from the French word croc, meaning a hook. It forms a fabric by looping a single continuous length of yarn in repetitive stitches. Unlike knitting which uses two needles, crochet only requires one hook. Traces of the craft are found in cultures all over the world, though the crochet we'd recognise today was first seen in Europe in the early 19th century. The styles vary from intricate lace to denser stitches used mostly in garments.
Over the past few years, crochet has had a resurgence, with designers like Drew Kent and Helen Rodel re-thinking traditional techniques through material and textural exploration. Crochet cannot be replicated by machine, making it a key craft within the slow-fashion movement.
Beyond the trend, there’s something wonderfully absorbing about making by hand. The slow, rhythmic repetition of crochet gives you the chance to switch off, focus on the moment and take a first step towards discovering where making might lead you. Come along, take a couple of hours for yourself, and leave with a handmade pair of gloves and a new skill you’ll want to keep using.

“Taking the time to learn in the inspiring environment of Colne Road Studios was such a treat! The group was welcoming and supportive and Rachel is an extremely talented and generous teacher, sharing her skills and knowledge to give us fresh perspectives and a wealth of useful advice and feedback. I felt my ability and interest in drawing had been revived after many years dormant, learning how to observe as well as how to draw. I would encourage anyone willing to pick up a pencil to have a go, and have already signed up to Rachel’s next course! “CB March 2025

All of our longer courses are exchangeable up until 28 days prior to the start of the course. After this, you are able to change your booking to a different course for a £20 admin fee. Please note that from 14 days prior to the start of the course, your booking is non-refundable and non-exchangeable.
Our refund policy is strict because it enables us to pay ourselves and our tutors a fair wage, and remain accessible as a studio.
Every time we are asked to to accommodate a refund request, we would be forced to lower our staff wages or increase our prices – both of which we really want to avoid. We hope you understand that this is why there are no exemptions to our refund policies.
