6 hours over two consecutive mornings — 2 × 3-hour sessions
Combine gel printing and lino block printing to transform a ready-made A6 concertina sketchbook into a unique sequence of prints based around a theme of your choice.
This two-part workshop gives you time to experiment with colour, pattern and layering, design and cut your own lino blocks, and explore how individual images can connect and unfold across the length of a concertina.
It’s a particularly good next step if you’ve already enjoyed one of our lino or gel-printing tasters at Colne Road Studios, giving you the opportunity to bring the two processes together in a more developed project. Beginners are also very welcome.
Start with something that interests you.
Choose a favourite subject or theme — plants, birds, insects, garden tools, architecture, everyday objects or something entirely your own. Bring photographs, drawings or other references with you, or simply come along and work from the inspiration and imagery available at the studio.
Morning 1 — Gel Printing, Colour & Layers
Begin by exploring gel printing to create colour, texture, pattern and atmosphere across your concertina.
Working directly onto the pages and experimenting on additional papers, you’ll explore how repeated shapes, transparent layers and changes in colour can link one fold to the next.
Morning 2 — Design, Cut & Lino Print
On the second morning, you’ll design and cut your own lino blocks based on your chosen theme. Vicki will guide you through simplifying an image, transferring it to lino and cutting a strong, printable design.
You’ll then print with your own blocks — alongside any of the studio blocks you’d like to use — building them over and amongst the gel-printed layers created on the first morning.
Think about repetition, rhythm, contrast and the spaces between images, allowing your design to travel across the folds and reveal itself as the concertina opens.
By the end of the second morning, you’ll have turned a simple ready-made concertina into a one-off printed artwork — something to unfold, display, keep or give as a gift.
Tried lino or gel printing with us before? This workshop is designed as a natural follow-on: a chance to revisit those skills, combine the two processes and take an idea further over two relaxed mornings.

At the moment the courses at Colne Road Studios are designed for adults over the age of 18 . The aim is to create a relaxed environment, provide a bit of an escape and switch off from every day responsibilites. We are not able to accommodate children in our classes, nor do we provide children’s classes at this time.
To secure a course, please book at least 8 days before the listed course start date.
Any course with no bookings 8 days prior to it’s start date will then be removed from the website .
Courses with fewer than 3 participants may be cancelled, with 5 days’ notice given to those who had enrolled.
You will be notified by email if this happens, unless you would like us to text you instead, but please let us know.
A refund for the full course value will then be made.

All of our longer courses are exchangeable up until 28 days prior to the start of the course. After this, you are able to change your booking to a different course for a £20 admin fee. Please note that from 14 days prior to the start of the course, your booking is non-refundable and non-exchangeable.
Our refund policy is strict because it enables us to pay ourselves and our tutors a fair wage, and remain accessible as a studio.
Every time we are asked to to accommodate a refund request, we would be forced to lower our staff wages or increase our prices – both of which we really want to avoid. We hope you understand that this is why there are no exemptions to our refund policies.
